Higher Level Maths is one of the most challenging subjects in the Leaving Cert — but with the right strategy, it can also be one of the most rewarding. Whether you're aiming for a H1 or just trying to feel more confident going into your exam (to bag those all important 25 points), these study tips are tried, tested, and designed to help you succeed.
Here are our top 5 study tips for Higher Level Maths success:
Master the Past Papers 📝
This is your secret weapon. The Leaving Cert follows clear patterns, and practicing past exam questions helps you spot them. Start with the last 5–7 years, and don’t just look at the questions — write out full answers, time yourself, and correct your own work using marking schemes. Bonus: you’ll start to recognise what topics are repeatedly asked.
Build Your Formula Fluency 📚
Having access to the Formula and Tables isn’t enough — you need to understand how and when to use each one. Create a set of flashcards for formulas, with one side showing the formula and the other showing a worked example or question prompt for when to use it. Test yourself weekly until they become second nature.
Don’t Just Memorise — Understand 🔍
Memorising methods without understanding why they work will only get you so far. Take time to ask: “Why does this method work?” or “Could I explain this to someone else?” If you can teach it, you truly know it. If not — that’s your cue to review it again.
Break It Into Blocks 📅
Higher Level Maths has a huge syllabus. Create a plan that covers 2–3 key topics at a time. Mix algebra, geometry, and statistics so your brain switches gears — this helps with recall and reduces burnout.
Get Feedback and Support 🤝
The fastest way to improve? Get someone to check your work. Whether it’s a teacher, tutor, or grind, feedback helps you fix errors early and avoid repeating them. At Piece of Pi, our grinds are designed to give targeted feedback so students know exactly what to focus on.
🎯 Final Word
Success in Higher Level Maths doesn’t come from cramming — it comes from smart, structured study. Start early, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
